SERIES HISTORYÂ
SMU and Memphis have faced off each year since the 2005 season and played twice before then, in both 1982 and 2001. The two played at the beginning of October in Memphis when the Tigers won 3-2 after scoring the game-winner in the 99th minute. Tobin Shanks and Bailey Sparks scored goals for the Mustangs while Maximillian Galizzi scored two and Artur De Luca tallied the golden goal for the Tigers. SMU holds an impressive 9-1 record when playing Memphis in Dallas. The team's only loss thus far came on Oct. 18, 2019 when the Tigers won 4-3 in overtime. The two have never played to a draw, despite having played to single overtime three times and double overtime twice.
KNOW THE FOEÂ
Memphis began the season with a 1-4-1 record against non-conference opponents and have since posted a 4-4-1 record in conference play. They currently sit in fourth place heading into this week's final regular season match. The Tigers defeated AAC opponent Temple twice, split wins with UCF and fell to Tulsa twice. Against USF, Memphis lost one and played the second to a scoreless draw. Their fourth conference win was the season's first matchup against SMU. Memphis boasts 11 upperclassmen and 19 underclassmen, including eight freshmen, on its fall roster. The Tigers were picked to finish last in the American Athletic Conference's Preseason Coaches Poll.
LAST TIME OUT
Skage Simonsen led the way on Sunday with his second career hat trick as SMU defeated UCF by a final score of 5-0. Simonsen opened the scoring in the 23rd minute to tally the eventual game-winner then scored two consecutive goals in the second half. Wyatt Priest and Gabriel Costa added to the total with one goal apiece while Mads Westergren, Knut Ahlander and Harvey Castro each tallied an assist. Keeper Cole Johnson and the Mustang defense helped the team to its sixth shutout of the season and third in a row. Johnson saved the Knights' only shot on goal as the backline held UCF to just seven total shots.
