KNOW THE FOEÂ
Denver holds a 1-1-0 record to start the season after dropping a 3-0 final at Oregon State on Aug. 27 then earning a 1-0 win at Portland on Aug. 30. In exhibition matches, the Pioneers earned two wins and one tie. Denver was picked to finish second in the 2021 Summit League Preseason Coaches' Poll while midfielders Stefan DeLeone and Liam Johnson were named to the league's Players to Watch list. Johnson was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List last week. The Pioneers finished the 2020 spring season 6-2-0 and won the Summit League before the team had to withdraw from the NCAA Tournament due to COVID-19 protocols. Â
LAST TIME OUT
SMU earned its second 3-1 win last Thursday at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium as the Mustangs defeated Houston Baptist. Gabriel Costa recorded his second multi-goal game in as many appearances as the senior scored in the 17th and 66th minutes. The first goal was assisted by freshman Bailey Sparks while the second had helpers from Lane Warrington and Knut Ahlander. Ahlander finished the night with three points as he kicked of the match's scoring with his first goal of the season in the fifth minute thanks to assists from Papa Ndoye and Kyran Chambron Pinho. Ahlander and Costa finished with three shots apiece while Skage Simonsen added three and Jose Ortiz contributed four. Cole Johnson earned his second win thanks to one recorded save and many more reactions that kept the Huskies to one goal.
