Day One Results
DALLAS – SMU men's swimming and diving got off to a strong start in the AAC Conference Championships today at the
Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium. The Mustangs were dominant across the board, sweeping the diving podium and winning both races in the pool.
All four of SMU's divers made it into the 1-meter championship final based on their prelim scores.
Peter Smithson led the way in prelims with a score of 341.65, followed by
Parker Hardigree at 337.50. Hardigree was outstanding in the final, defending his title with a career best score of 367.35. Smithson came in second at 352.30 and Hoefer took third at 325.45. All three of these scores were good enough for NCAA Zone standards.
The 800 freestyle relay was extremely competitive between the Mustangs and Cincinnati. SMU got off to an early two body length lead before the Bearcats came storming back to pull in front.
Wyatt Cronk, swimming the anchor leg of the relay, overtook the lead in the final moments, touching the wall just 0.24 seconds before his opponent. The Mustangs set a school record of 6:22.60.
Colin Feehery,
Tyler Mansheim, and
Robby King swam the first three legs for SMU. Feehery also hit an NCAA B cut and finished with the second fastest time in school history for the 200 freestyle with his leadoff 1:34.64 leg.
The Mustangs finished the night with yet another victory, setting a new AAC Championship meet record, school record, and hitting an NCAA provisional standard cut in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:24.64. The school record had been unbroken since 2009.
Cole Bruns,
Caleb Rhodenbaugh,
Riley Hill, and
Justin Baker took part in the relay for SMU.
The AAC Championships will continue tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. on ESPN+ at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium with swimming and diving prelims.
