SAN DIEGO (SMU) – Fresh off their 4-3 win over No. 18 Texas A&M, SMU men's tennis are set to travel to San Diego, California for a packed slate which includes dual matches against UNLV and No. 35 San Diego, as well as the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship.
SMU vs. UNLV – March 3, 12:00 PM CT – La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club
The Runnin' Rebels come into the match with a record of 4-6. Christopher Bulus has led the team from the No. 1 singles spot with a dual match record of 6-3. They are also 7-1 in No. 3 doubles this season. SMU has not faced UNLV since 2011, winning 4-3 at a neutral site. They are 3-1 all-time against the Runnin' Rebels.
SMU vs. No. 35 San Diego – March 5, 3:00 PM CT – University of San Diego
The Toreros currently hold an impressive 6-1 record which includes wins against Arizona State, Oregon, and Gonzaga. They are ranked No. 35 in the nation and have won their last five matches. Playing on San Diego's No. 1 line, August Holmgren is 3-3 so far this season, and holds a national singles ranking of No. 8. Holmgren and his doubles partner Guilherme Osorio are ranked No. 43 in doubles, coming in undefeated in dual play at 5-0. The Mustangs are 2-0 all-time against the Toreros, having won both matches 4-3.
Pacific Coast Doubles Championship – March 3-6 – La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club
The Mustangs will also be competing in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club throughout their time in San Diego. All 17 Mustangs will be competing, including California native Kyle Pham who will be playing with his brother. Head coach Grant Chen and Assistant coach Ben Johnson will also be taking part in the action. World No. 73 ranked Brandon Nakashima will be the most notable name playing in the tournament.

Liam Krall, primarily playing at the No. 2 spot, is 7-1 in singles dual matches and 5-1 in doubles, 3-1 playing with primary partner Julian Steinhausen.

Making National Noise
The Mustangs pulled off a dramatic 4-3 road win over No. 18 Texas A&M on February 27th. This was SMU's highest ranked win since defeating No. 8 Texas Tech in the second round of the NCAA tournament and third ranked win since head coach Grant Chen took over the program in 2018. Former Aggie, Pranav Kumar clinched the win for SMU.

Ranking the 'Stangs
In the latest ITA national rankings, SMU jumped 17 spots to No. 41. The highest the Mustangs climbed last year was No. 44.

Mustangs On Tour
Four SMU men's tennis players debuted on the ATP Tour at the Dallas Open in February. Caleb Chakravarthi, Liam Krall, and Adam Neff were all awarded matches in singles, while Neff and Ivan Thamma were given a spot in doubles. The field included three top-30 ranked players in the world including John Isner, Taylor Fritz, and Reilly Opelka. Neff and Thamma came closest to winning their match, as they split sets with Sam Querrey and Jackson Withrow before losing 10-5 on a tiebreak.

AAC Honors
Graduate senior Pranav Kumar was named AAC Men's Tennis player of the week on March 1st, after clinching the Mustangs 4-3 win over his former team, the No. 18 ranked Texas A&M. This was Kumar's second consecutive match clinching win, having lifted SMU to victory over Nebraska 4-3 on February 20th.

Fall Titles
SMU won a number of tournaments this fall. Former AAC Freshman of the Year Liam Krall took the singles title at the Lakes Collegiate Invitational. Senior Captain Caleb Chakravarthi won the singles and doubles title along with Julian Steinhausen at the Islander Invite.
