DALLAS (SMU)- SMU women's tennis pitched a pair of 4-0 sweeps over Abilene Christian and Incarnate Word Thursday at the Stylsinger/ Altec Tennis Complex. Mustangs move to 2-0 in dual matches in the 2023 season.
SMU has now won 12 consecutive matches over the Wildcats dating back to 2009. This marks the first dual match victory over the Cardinals.
 
Abilene Christian Doubles
The Mustangs got off to a quick start as 
Taylor Johnson and 
Jackie Nylander picked up the No. 1 doubles win against Marsha Vralovic and Olivia Sears 6-1.
Hadley Doyle and 
Lana Mavor, playing No. 2, closed in the doubles point for the Mustangs, as they defeated Maryjoe Crisologo and Maria Cascos 6-3.
 
Abilene Christian Singles
Mustangs found similar success in the singles matches.
Hadley Doyle never trialed as she picked up the No. 1 victory over Maryjoe Crisologo 6-0, 6-2.
Sophomore 
Drew Morris had an energetic victory at the No. 2 spot over Marsha Vralovic 6-2, 6-0.
Lana Mavor rounded up the sweep as she defeated Andrea Guerrero in the No. 4 spot 6-0, 6-2.
 
Incarnate Word Doubles
The second match of the day started off in a similar fashion as 
Hadley Doyle and 
Lana Mavor picked up the No. 3 spot victory over NItika Girish and Gargi Pawar 6-2.
Maja Makoric and 
Drew Morris clinched the doubles point for the Mustangs as the picked up the No. 2 spot win over Estefania Gonzalez and Amelie Montalvo 6-4.
Taking the No. 1 spot, 
Taylor Johnson and 
Jackie Nylander saved two match points as they defeated Bradelyn Fulgenzi and Lauren Fulgenzi 7-6 (10-8).
Incarnate Word Singles
Taylor Johnson had a quick No. 1 victory over Lyric Bonilla 6-2, 6-1.
Drew Morris took the second singles victory for the Mustangs in the No. 3 spot over Estefania Gonzalez 6-0, 6-3.
Lana Mavor, again, clinched the sweep for the Mustangs as she defeated Lauren Fulgenzi 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 5 spot.
"While it was nice to start the season off with 2 wins this group knows we need to raise our standards on the court," said head coach 
Jeff Nevolo. "We managed to close out where we needed to but for where we want to go it's going to take a total team effort. Hats off to both ACU and Incarnate Word. Coach Rainwater and Coach Rees do a great job with their programs and came to play today, and we wish them the best of luck with their seasons moving forward."
The Mustangs are back in action January 21st in Austin to take on No. 1 the University of Texas.
