Austin, TEXAS (SMU)- SMU women's tennis had its first loss of the new season to No. 1 Texas, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Texas Tennis Center.

"After a disappointing doubles points the team did a great job grabbing some momentum in singles and turning the match into a battle," said head coach Jeff Nevolo. "We will get back to work this week to get ready for ITA kickoff weekend at Duke. We have a lot of positives to take from today's match and a lot to build on."

The Mustangs got down in a hurry as Texas claimed the doubles point. Charlotte Chavatipon and Sabina Zeynalova took the No. 1 spot over the No. 32-ranked Jackie Nylander and Taylor Johnson. Nicole Rivkin and Taisiya Pachkaleva clinched the first point of the match with a 6-1 victory over Drew Morris and Maja Makoric playing No. 2.

The Longhorns added on to their lead as Sabina Zeynalova defeated Jackie Nylander 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot. Hadley Doyle was then defeated in the No. 1 spot to Charlotte Chavatipon 6-4, 6-2.

Playing in the No. 6 spot, Lana Mavor picked up the first point for the Mustangs as she had a straight set victory over Grace Thomas 6-4, 6-0.

The Mustangs began to close in the once 3-0 lead as Drew Morris defeated Taisiya Pachkaleva 6-4, 6-3 making the score 3-2.

At the No. 5 spot, Maja Makoric lost the first set to Nicole Rivkin 7-5. Battled back in the second to win the second set 7-6 (7-4). Forcing a third set where Makoric was defeated 6-1 which clinched the Longhorns the final point.

Taylor Johnson ended the day in a gut wrenching 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) loss to No. 85 Malaika Rapolu.

The Mustangs are back in action January 28th in Durham North Carolina to take on Wisconsin.
