DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men's tennis team earned 21 match victories between singles and doubles play against a combined eight teams during the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.

The event – named in honor of longtime SMU coaches Carl Neufeld and the late Dennis Ralston – hosted 15 teams, 11 of which rank in the ITA's top-75.

"Our coaching staff collectively felt that this has been our most productive fall in recent seasons," said Head Coach Grant Chen. "Everyone got plenty of competition, and we saw tons of development and progress in every single player. We participated in 10 tournaments over the last seven weeks and know what we need to do."

On Friday, SMU six earned victories over BYU, New Mexico and Air Force. SMU's duo of Kyle Sillman and Louis Cloud posted to doubles wins over BYU's TJ Wells and Brian Chen (7-6(5)) and New Mexico's Rafael Abdulsalam and Georgio Samaha (6-4) for two of the Mustangs' four doubles victories.

Alex Stafford picked up his first singles win of the weekend on Friday against Air Force's Nick Vroman (6-1, 3-6, 10-1). Stafford went on to go 4-0 in singles play, defeating opponents from New Mexico, Boise State and Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Saturday and Sunday.

No. 117 Liam Krall, Maks Silagy and Callaway Clark all came away victorious in multiple singles matches on the weekend.

Krall and Clark also combined for two doubles victories. The senior duo defeated BYU's Jack Barnett and Redd Owen (6-4) and UTA's Pedro Sasso-Yazid Lahjomri combo 6-1.

"Being a student athlete is very demanding, and I give great credit to our student athletes. We are hungry and eager to get into the spring portion of the season going, but we will enjoy the off-season," said Chen.

Ralston coached at SMU from 1981-89 and 1991-93. He is a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and SMU Hall of Fame. Neufeld coached the Mustangs from 1994-2018 and won 420 matches at SMU, ranking the most wins in program history.
