LAWRENCE, Kan.- No. 44-ranked SMU fell 4-0 to No. 21 Kansas on Sunday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Complex. Kansas won the doubles point followed by three straight singles matches to clinch the win.
SMU is now 6-4 overall throughout the dual season.
The Jayhawks acted first with a 6-1 victory on Court 1.
Taylor Johnson and
Drew Morris kept the Mustangs in the running for the doubles point with a 6-3 victory on Court 2.
Hadley Doyle and
Lana Mavor had six unanswered games to force a deciding tiebreaker at 6-6. Mavor and Doyle fell 7-3 in the tiebreaker giving the Jayhawks the doubles point.
Jackie Nylander was the first to finish on Court 3 in singles after losing the first set 6-0 and forced to retire in the second.
Maja Makoric fell on Court 5, 6-1, 6-3, extending the Jayhawks lead.
The Jayhawks clinched the win after No. 41 Malkia Ngounoue defeated No. 89
Hadley Doyle 6-3, 7-5.
Although the remaining matches were left unfinished, the Mustangs were still fighting.
Drew Morris had won the first set on Court 4, 6-3 and was up in the second 4-3.
Lana Mavor had also won her first set, 6-3 and was tied in the second 4-4.
SMU returns home to the Styslinger/ Altec Tennis Complex March 5 to host a doubleheader against Texas Tech at 11 a.m. and Richmond at 5 p.m.
