KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (SMU) – SMU women's golf won the Briar's Creek Invitational at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek for its third title of the season and second in as many weeks. Freshman
Yunxuan (Michelle) Zhang captured a share of the individual title with a final score of six-under par.
The Mustangs came into the day trailing UCF by three strokes. SMU quickly began the work of narrowing the gap, sizing the lead down to one stroke through seven holes in the final round. A flurry of birdies from the Mustangs propelled SMU in front near the midway point of the round. The Mustangs would continue to grow the lead all the way to three by the end of competition.
The third win of the season for SMU tied the single-season Mustang record set by the 2000-01, 2003-04 and 2012-13 squads. The 15-below par final total was the third lowest 54-hole score recorded by the Mustangs with all three of the lowest scores coming in the 2022-23 season.
Zhang moved up the leaderboard from her starting eighth place position heading into day 2. Her final round total of two-under, brought her to six under for the tournament and into a tie with Lauren Olivares for the individual crown. Zhang shot 70 in each round for her third top-10 finish of her young career
Ellie Szeryk shot one-over in the final round to finish in sixth place. The finish marked Szeryk's fourth top-10 finish of the season.
Mackenzie Lee recorded her seventh top-10 finish of the season and fourth top-5 finish as she came in a tie for third place. Lee shot 69 in the first two rounds followed by a 73 in round three.
Lauren Miller rocketed up the leaderboard in the final round thanks to a score of 71 on Tuesday. Miller moved up 29 spots and into a tie for 37
th place.
Ashley Chow shot 77 on the final day to end play in a share of 42
nd place.
The Mustangs return to the course for their final regular season meet, the Chattanooga Classic, running April 2-4.
