DALLAS (SMU)- No. 47 SMU women's tennis picked up its biggest win of the season in its final home match of the regular season with a 4-0 shutout over No. 25 San Diego.
The Mustangs claimed 11-of-12 completed sets as they close out their home schedule with a 10-1 overall record and are 13-1 in the past 14 home matches.
SMU also notched its fifth ranked win and eighth shutout over the spring with the result.
SMU took the doubles point from San Diego courtesy of victories on Courts 1 and 2 from
Jackie Nylander and
Maja Makoric and
Taylor Johnson and
Lana Mavor. Mavor got the match-clincher in singles play on Court 5. Her victory was preceded by straight set wins on Courts 1 and 2 by
Hadley Doyle and
Taylor Johnson.
"Our team did a great job today. It was a full commitment to our standards across the board," said head coach
Jeff Nevolo. "We are also very grateful to all the faculty and staff for coming out and supporting our team today. They created a great college tennis environment"
Nylander and Makoric got SMU the head start to the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Solymar Colling and Kailey Evans on Court 1. Nylander and Makoric would break at 2-2 and win the next four games to close out the match.
Johnson and Mavor never trailed against Claudia De las Heras and Jordyn McBride to take a 6-3 decision on Court 2 and get SMU out to a 1-0 head start.
Doyle and
Drew Morris were in a race with Court 2 to get the doubles point clincher as the duo was up 5-2 serving for the match before their match was left unfinished.
SMU took the opening set in all six courts in singles play.
Doyle, No. 123 in the ITA singles rankings, was the first player of the court and she downed Claudia De Las Heras in a quick 6-0, 6-2 match on Court 1. She improves to 8-3 in her singles victories throughout the spring and is on a hot four match win streak.
Johnson, the reigning AAC Women's Player of the Week (Apr. 11) clinched her match minutes apart from Doyle to give SMU the 3-0 lead. Johnson put up SMU's second donut of the day with a 6-0 opening set then cruised to a 6-3 takedown in the conclusive second set on Court 2. Johnson extends her win streak to six straight and improves to a 9-4 record this spring.
Mavor got the clinch for the sixth time this season while taking down Jordyn McBride. Mavor was up 5-2 in the opening set before dropping the next two games as McBride tightened the lead. Mavor got the break to take the first set 6-4. In the second, Mavor was down 2-3 but went on to take the next four games in a row to take the final set 6-3 giving SMU the win. Mavor is now tied with Morris with a team high of 12 wins this season.
Courts 3, 4 and 6 would go unfinished due to the triumph on Court 5.
Morris clawed out of a 1-4 hole in the opening set against the nation's No. 86 player of Abigail Desiatnikov to take the first set 6-4. The second set was tied at 2-2 before play was halted.
Nylander was battling the nation's No. 59 singles player of Kailey Evans on Court 4. Nylander took the first set 6-1 while Evans responded with a 6-3 win forcing a deciding third set. Play had just begun as the match was clinched, leaving the third set at 0-0.
Makoric was in a race with Mavor to get her first match-clincher of the season as both were serving at 4-3 in the second. After taking the first set 6-3, Flippa Bruu- Syversen broke Makoric tying the second set at 4-4 leaving the match went unfinished.
The Mustangs look to add their sixth ranked victory as they travel to Orlando, Fla. on Apr. 16 for their last match of the regular season against conference opponent No. 39 UCF. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
