BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (SMU) – SMU women's golf leads the 2023 American Athletic Conference Golf Championship by six strokes heading into the final round of play from Southern Hills Golf Club.
The Mustangs came into the day with a five-stroke lead over Tulsa. Paired alongside the Golden Hurricane, the Mustangs stretched their lead to as many as eight in the early going of round two. Tulsa would rally to draw even with the Mustangs nearing the end of the round. The Mustangs used the last few holes to push back in front and earn a six-stroke lead heading into the final round. UCF and Tulsa are tied in second place at five-under. On Wednesday, the Mustangs will attempt to win their first conference title since 1992.
Yunxuan (Michelle) Zhang maintained her spot on the top of the leaderboard with another strong day. Zhang shot a 68 to increase her lead from two to four strokes over second-place Moe Svedenskiold of Houston. With a score of 10-under through two rounds, Zhang tied the SMU 36-hole record set by
Mackenzie Lee back at the Icon Invitational. The freshman will attempt to win her second title of the season after a victory at the Briar's Creek back in March. Zhang will also look to make it back-to-back individual titles for the Mustangs after
Kennedy Pedigo won the honor last season.
Ashley Chow came into the day in a tie for third but fell back early in the round. She played three-under in her final seven holes to gain position on the leaderboard. Chow sits in a tie for eighth place.
Lauren Miller sits in a tie for 14
th after shooting one over for the round. Miller moved up two spots on the day. Also in 14
th,
Ellie Szeryk shot two-over for the day.
Mackenzie Lee carded a 74 to join Miller and Szeryk in a 14
th.
In search of a conference title and its fifth tournament title of the season, SMU returns to the course for the final round again paired alongside Tulsa. The Mustangs tee off at 9:25 a.m. ET / 8:25 a.m. CT. The final round will be streamed on ESPN+.
