With the top five teams advancing to the NCAA Championship, the Mustangs sat in a comfortable second-place position after two rounds, 14 strokes clear of the final non-advancing spot.  The Mustangs overtook then first-place Texas A&M to sit in first place early in round one but would be passed by Pepperdine nearing the end of play. A final push by SMU, sent the Mustangs even with Pepperdine to earn a share of the Regional Championship trophy. The victory marked the Mustangs first time advancing out of the NCAA Regional.
