DALLAS, Texas (SMU) -- SMU is back in action this weekend at the Chile Pepper Invite 5k in Arkansas. The race will serve as a preview for the 2023 NCAA South Central Regional course. 

"The last time SMU competed in Arkansas was the 2019 NCAA South Central Regional over 6k," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "The team will compete this weekend as a way to preview this year's regional course with almost an entirely new roster." 

Maddie Hulcy is the only returner from SMU's 2019 squad. Also competing will be Faustine Chaboche, Jessie Crowley, Kaitlyn Gearin, Leoni Mierswa, Flora Tissier, and Kendall Saeger. The team is currently ranked sixth in the South Central Region rankings after two weekends off from competition. 

"Over the last few races, I have asked the women to be composed at the start with very specific kilometer or mile paces," Haynes said. "This competition is important for the women to utilize the composure while also fully racing to their ability." 

SMU will be in the second heat of the race beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
