WACO, Texas (SMU) — SMU Men's Tennis sophomore
Trevor Svajda wrapped his second NCAA Individual Championship in the round of 32 in Waco, Texas, Wednesday.
Svajda advanced in the NCAA Individual Championship in his second consecutive year after defeating Columbia's Hugo Hashimoto (6-2, 1-6, 6-4) in the round of 64, Tuesday. He fell in the round of 32 to No. 5 seed Jay Friend from Arizona (3-6, 6-3, 6-4).
"Today was a heartbreaker. The margins are so small. I was able to gut out a tough win yesterday but lost a close one today," said Svajda. "I'm so excited to help this team in the spring."
The California native became the first Mustang to advance in the NCAA Individual Championship last season since Johan Brunstrom in 2004.
Svajda earned his qualification to the NCAA Individual Championships by making the semifinal round in the ITA Sectional Championship. He won in straight sets in all of his matches in the tournament.
"Great fall for Trevor. To earn his spot in NCAA Championships and compete in two very strong matches is terrific," said Head Coach
Grant Chen. "He has elevated and shown so much growth since arriving in Dallas in January."
