DALLAS (SMU) – No. 12 Seed SMU Men's Soccer will host 13th-seeded Marshall for its Elite Eight match at Washburne Stadium on Saturday.
The Mustangs advanced to the NCAA Championship quarterfinals after winning 3-1 at No. 5 Dayton on Nov. 30.
Marshall advanced to the Elite Eight round with a 2-1 win over NC State in Huntington, West Virginia, Nov. 30.
Mustangs vs. Thundering Herd
- This match will be the 10th meeting between the Mustangs and the Thundering Herd.
- The two sides played each other every season from 2005 to 2012 as former Conference USA opponents.Â
- SMU leads the series 6-2-1 and has won the two previous meetings in 2012 and 2011.
- The two teams' prior meeting was in Dallas, where the Mustangs won 1-0 in overtime.
- SMU is undefeated against Marshall in the last four meetings.
SMU's Elite Eight Appearances
The Mustangs will make their 14th NCAA Quarterfinals appearance.
This will be SMU's second Elite Eight appearance under Head Coach Kevin Hudson.
Their previous NCAA Elite Eight appearance was in 2019, when they played at No. 1 Seed Virginia.
SMU's Sweet Sixteen Win
No. 12 Seed SMU Men's Soccer won 3-1 at fifth-seeded Dayton to advance to the NCAA Championship quarterfinal round on Saturday.
Dayton scored early in the first minute, but the Mustangs scored three goals to seal their Elite Eight appearance.
The Mustangs' three goals came from Kyran Chambron Pinho, Bailey Sparks and Owen Zarnick.
Daniel Escorcia assisted Chambron Pinho's equalizer goal. Chambron Pinho and Sparks both made an assist to pair with their goals.
SMU's 36th NCAA Tournament
The Mustangs earned the No. 12 seed.
SMU earned a national seed and a first-round bye, as announced in the selection show on Monday.
This will be SMU's seventh NCAA appearance under Kevin Hudson in his 10-year tenure.
This marks the third consecutive season the Mustangs have earned a national seed and first-round bye in the NCAA Championship.

SMU's NCAA Second Round
No. 12 Seed SMU Men's Soccer advanced to the round of 16 of the NCAA Championship with a 2-1 win over Washington at Washburne Stadium, Sunday. Owen Zarnick provided the Mustangs with a late winner.
In a thrilling back-and-forth, the Mustangs were able to edge a 2-1 win over the Huskies with an 89th-minute goal by Zarnick.
Stephan Soghomonian scored his second career goal for the Mustangs, while Zarnick scored his third goal of the season to win the match.
Bailey Sparks contributed to his 15th goal of the season with an assist to Soghomonian's equalizer. Lamar Bynum assisted the match-winner and now has two assists this season.
SMU vs Top-25 Opponents
SMU is 4-2-3 against top 25 opponents after winning at No. 5 Dayton on Saturday.
Marshall will be the 10th ranked side the Mustangs play this season. This is the most number of ranked opponents the Mustangs have faced in a single season under Kevin Hudson.
No. 5 Dayton was the highest-ranked win for the Mustangs this season.
No. 5 Stanford, who they drew against, was the highest-seeded team that the Mustangs went against in the regular season.
This season, SMU has wins over fifth-ranked Dayton, No. 6 Saint Louis, No. 13 Virginia Tech and No. 19 Washington, a draw against No.5 Stanford, ninth-ranked Denver and No. 18 Duke.
