SMU is headed into the final day of the AAC Championships with medalists already in their midst.Â
Funminiyi Olajide broke the stadium and meet record while bettering her own school record with a jump of 6.59 meters to win the long jump. The jump ranks seventh in the nation.Â
"I'm really happy," Olajide said. "It was my first series of jumps this outdoor season, so I'm glad I got a regionals mark down."
Olivia Dobson earned a bronze medal in the heptathlon after placing third in the long jump and javelin and fifth in the 800. She scored 5,526 points. Gabriella Ayiteyfio scored 5,302 — also bringing in big points for the Mustangs in fourth place.
Yesterday's preliminary races also qualified SMU athletes for today's finals. Nea Sanders will race in today's 100 meter hurdle finals after placing fifth in the preliminary race with a time of 13.62. Whitney Williams will also be running in the 400 meter final. She placed eighth in yesterday's qualifying race with a time of 54.51.
Nikoleta Rafailaki ran a time of 11:16.32 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase to place 10th among the field.
The Mustangs sit in fifth with 26 points headed into this final day of competition.
