CARLSBAD, Calif. (SMU) - SMU women's golf wrapped up its 2023-24 season with a 24
th place finish at the NCAA Championship from Omni La Costa Champions Course. The Mustangs recorded back-to-back top 25 national finishes for the first time since 1991-92.
The Mustangs came into the day in 30
th place among the field. They gained ground during the back nine with low scores from
Mackenzie Lee and
Ellie Szeryk. The Mustangs climbed six spots into a tie for 24
th with Oklahoma State. The top 15 teams earned a spot on Monday.
Emily Odwin was the highest-finishing Mustang with a 64
th place showing. Odwin carded a 75 in the third round to move up nine spots on the leaderboard. Her best round of the Championship came in a middle round 73. In nine starts this season, Odwin recorded six top 20 finishes.
Lee had the best round by a Mustang at the Championship on Sunday. Lee gained 41 spots on the leaderboard thanks to a 32 on the back nine. She eagled the par four 14
th hole on her way to an even par 72. Lee finished in a tie for 86
th. Lee finished the season with a 71.32 scoring average, setting a new program record.
Ellie Szeryk climbed 13 spots on the leaderboard during the third round. She had three birdies on her way to a 77. In her two years on the Hilltop, Szeryk recorded 13 top 10 finishes.
Ashley Chow finished in a tie for 132
nd. She carded a 76 in her opening round for her best showing of the weekend. Chow finished her time as a Mustang with an SMU career record of eagles with 9.
June Song carded a 77 in the final round with three birdies in the round.
The Mustangs wrapped up another successful season with the final round on Sunday. During the 2023-24 campaign, SMU won five tournament titles, one off the program record set back in 2022-23. The Mustangs won an AAC title for the second consecutive year, this time with a dramatic nine-stroke comeback on the final day. SMU women's golf set the team 54-hole, team 18-hole, individual 54-hole and individual 18-hole record all at their victory at the Jim West Challenge. The Mustangs returned to the regional where they finished in a tie for second. The
Lauren Mason led Mustangs advanced to the NCAA Championship for the second consecutive season for the first time since 1991-92.
