DALLAS (SMU) – SMU is set to host Incarnate Word for their fifth non-conference match of the season at 7 p.m., Monday.
The Mustangs are undefeated in non-conference play this season with a 2-0-2 record. SMU's non-conference record includes a win over No. 6 Saint Louis and a draw to ninth-ranked Denver earlier this season.
Kevin Hudson's squad returns to Washburne Stadium after grabbing its first Atlantic Coast Conference win at Cal. Kyran Chambron Pinho scored the match winner of their 2-1 win over the Golden Bears.
Mustangs vs. Cardinals
- This will be the fifth meeting between the Mustangs and the Cardinals.
- The two teams have only met in Dallas, where SMU won all four previous encounters.
- SMU has only given up one goal against UIW. They won 3-1 in 1985.
- Their prior meeting was in 2021, where the Mustangs won 3-0.
- UIW was the first team that SMU played against (exhibition) under Kevin Hudson in 2015. The Mustangs won the exhibition, 2-0, in Dallas.
Revisit Their Previous Meeting
- SMU scored two second-half goals en route to a 3-0 win over UIW.
- Jose Ortiz and Gabriel Costa each had a goal and an assist for the Mustangs (3-0-2), who earned their fifth win over the Cardinals (1-4-1) in program history.
- Roman Knox opened the scoring in the 25th minute.
- The tally came shortly after he assisted Ortiz in scoring a goal in the 53rd minute. Costa scored a penalty kick to kill the match in the 59th minute.
- The Mustangs outshot UIW (1-4-1) 23-3 in for the game. Cole Johnson recorded the shutout in goal for SMU.
Mustangs' First ACC Win
- SMU won 2-1 at Cal to grab its first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference win, Friday.
- The Mustangs resumed their trend of dominating possession by outshooting the Golden Bears 12 to seven. They made seven attempts on goal while only allowing five from the hosts.
- Bailey Sparks opened the scoreline early with a goal in the 11th minute from the penalty spot. SMU closed the first half with the lead, but the hosts responded with an equalizer in the 55th minute of the match.
- Both teams traded control of the ball through the second half, but Kyran Chambron Pinho became the difference maker by taking back the lead for SMU with a goal in the 84th minute. The Mustangs fly home from California with three points.
On A Scoring Streak
- The Mustangs have scored at least one goal in 26 consecutive matches.
- Bailey Sparks is on an individual streak, having a goal involvement in all six matches this season (three goals and three assists).
