HONOLULU (SMU) – SMU Men's Tennis defeated Hawaii 7-0 to open spring 2025 at the UH Tennis Center on Monday.

"Feels great to start the new season. It feels even better to have it on the beautiful island of Hawaii. We are thankful for their gracious hospitality. We have had a solid training block and can see the hard miles pay off," said Head Coach Grant Chen.

With the win, SMU won their ninth consecutive season opener and remains undefeated against Hawaii with an 8-0 all-time record.

How It Went
The Mustangs captured the day's first point by taking the team doubles point.

Noah McDonald and Xavier Calvelo teamed up to take the first win of the season over Andy Hernandez and Sohta Urano (6-0). Jerry Barton and Maks Silagy clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Karl Collins and Diego Dalisay.

Vikas Deo took the Mustangs' first singles win of the season over Angus Hill (6-1, 6-1). McDonald and Ofek Shimanov also won their matches following Deo to clinch the match.

Barton defeated Collins (6-0, 6-2) to grab the Mustangs' fifth point and Georgi Georgiev grabbed the Mustangs' sixth point with a win over Tian Hao Hou (6-2, 6-4).

Svajda completed the sweep by defeating Azuma Visaya (7-6(7), 6-3).

Shimanov and Georgiev's wins were their first match wins as a Mustang.

"A lot of credit to our four freshmen who all contributed to today's match. It is exciting to have two fresh faces in Ofek and Georgi who joined the team this semester. We look forward to heading to Dallas and playing our first match on campus on Thursday," Chen said.
