DALLAS (SMU) – SMU and Head Football Coach Rhett Lashlee have agreed to a new two-year contract extension, the school announced Saturday.
Lashlee is in his fourth season at SMU, with 34 total wins and a 24-4 record in conference play across his tenure in Dallas. In SMU's inaugural year in the ACC, Lashlee and the Mustangs earned a College Football Playoff bid and competed in the ACC Championship Game. SMU finished last year ranked No. 12 in the AP Poll, the highest end-of-season ranking for SMU since 1984. In 2023, Lashlee led SMU to an American Conference championship, the program's first league title since 1984.
"SMU is a special place to our family. We are so excited for the opportunity to continue the process of building our program on the national stage," said Lashlee. "Lauren, Hudson, Thomas, Rowyn, Scarlet and I are excited about our future here at SMU and in the great city of Dallas. We are humbled and thankful for the faith President Hartzell, Athletic Director Damon Evans, our Board of Trustees and our passionate fanbase have placed in us and our staff."
"We are thrilled to extend Rhett and keep him as part of the SMU family," said Damon Evans, Director of Athletics. "Rhett has shown an unwavering commitment to elevating SMU Football to new heights, and under his leadership, we are building a program that will compete for championships year in and year out. I look forward to him and his family being on The Hilltop for years to come."
Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
