Second Varsity Eight Qualifies For Grand Final At ACC Championship

CLEMSON, S.C. (SMU) – SMU rowing completed day one of the ACC Rowing Championship with one third place finish, one fourth place, two fifths and a sixth.

"Overall I am proud of how the team raced this morning in the heats," said head coach Chase Graham. "I'd like to see us step up in some areas tomorrow and see what we can do in what will be some very competitive finals. I think we have more to show across the board. Highlights for the morning are the 2v8 and 3v8 races, both executed really well. Excited to see what our 2v8 can do in the A Final - senior coxswain Josephine Wilson and 5th year stroke seat Talei Dunn have done a great job leading that boat all season. In the varsity 8 and 4 I would like to see us be more aggressive in some areas of the race, and will look forward to doing that tomorrow in the finals. Pony Up!"

The Mustangs started the morning session on Lake Hartwell with the 3v8. The Mustangs finished in fourth with a time of 6:58.513, 17.260 behind first place Stanford. They beat the likes of Clemson and Louisville. In the 1v8, the Mustangs crossed the line in 6:33.999, 15.033 behind Cal. The Mustang topped Notre Dame in the race by 4.770.

The Mustangs posted their best finish of the day in the 2v8. They finished third in 6:35.532, just 5.506 behind first place. They finished in front of Clemson, Louisville and Miami. With the finish, the Mustangs qualified for Saturday's grand final in the 2v8.

In the 1v4, the Mustangs finished in 7:32.114, ahead of Louisville. In the final SMU race of the day, the 2v4, the Mustangs crossed the line in sixth with a time of 8:08.320.

The Mustangs return to the water for the final day at 7:05 a.m. CT.
