WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (SMU) — SMU has a new school record holder in the 400m hurdles after Kirin Chacchia ran a time of 57.75 to place fourth and pick up points for the Mustangs in the final day of the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
"Nothing beats the feeling of achieving the goals you set for yourself," Chacchia said. "I am so grateful and blessed to be able to compete here in the ACC, and even more so to have performed at my best. I am so proud of the ladies on this team, and I can't wait to see what the future holds."
Nea Sanders also picked up a medal in her hurdle final. She ran a time of 13.67 to place sixth in the 100m hurdles.
"I'm grateful to have been able to get a medal and couldn't have done it without the support of my teammates, coaches and family," Sanders said.
"Chacchia, Sanders, and Gabriella Ayietyfio left their mark – not only in team points and times but in the legacy of this program," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "The seniors' leadership and excellence propelled us to one of our strongest team performances yet, setting the tone for the future of our team in the ACC."
The 4x100 consisting of Raelyn Roberson, Ariana Sutton, Sanders and Jasmine Franklin ran a time of 45.17 placing eighth and earning a point for the Mustangs.
"In our inaugural year in the ACC, the team rose to the occasion with heart and determination," Haynes said. "They rewrote the record books, again and again this season. Every performance was fueled by grit, pride, and an unshakable belief to be better each day."
SMU placed 14th in their first ACC Outdoor Championship meet with 13 points.
The Mustangs will come back to the track for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in College Station May 28th through May 31st.
