DALLAS, Texas (SMU) -- For the first time in 27 years, Mustang athletes were able to compete on their very own track, and they made sure to make it count. Six new meet and facility records were created by SMU athletes today as they added their names to the Hilltop's rich track and field history.
"Today was memorable in many ways," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "The crowds, competitors and SMU fans were incredible. We celebrated track and field, and the women came away with wins, facility records and hungry for more. Track is back!"
The running at the SMU Invitational kicked off with Kaitlyn Gearin winning the 5,000 with a time of 16:26.52 -- a new meet and facility record – on her senior day. Fellow senior Emily Little also ran under the previous meet record, running 17:13.79 for second place.
The 4x100 ran a record-breaking 45.09 making Raelyn Roberson, Ariana Sutton, Kelis Jules and Jasmine Franklin the new meet and facility record holders. This is now the third fastest time in SMU history.
Senior Kendall Saeger ran a strong 4:34.09 time for second place to race her last regular season meet of her Mustang career.
Mustangs went first and second in the 100-meter hurdles with Nea Sanders coming away with the win and new meet and facility record. She ran 13.66. Gabriella Ayiteyfio came in second with 14.04.
Ariana Sutton is the new meet and facility record holder in the 400. She won the event with a time of 54.80. Hali Murphy placed seventh with 56.49. Freshman Magnolia Crissup had a PR of over a second with 57.01 for 10th.
Franklin had a fourth-place finish in the 100 with a time of 11.60. This is a new personal best and moves her to fifth all-time at SMU.
Coming away with the win and a new meet and facility record, Macey Hilton ran a time of 2:08.57 in the 800. Leoni Mierswa placed fifth with 2:18.70.
In the 200, Franklin placed seventh with 24.31 and Jules ran 25.41.
In the long jump, Roberson produced a season's best mark of 5.80 meters to place second. Maykayla Jackson jumped 5.38 meters.
In the triple jump, Jackson placed second with a mark of 12.04 meters – her best this season.
The meet concluded the same way it began – with a Mustang win! Sanders, Sutton, Emily Waller and Kirin Chacchia ran a new meet and facility record time of 3:42.48 for a 4x400 win to close out a historic event in Mustang history.
Thank you to all our Mustang fans for coming out to cheer on our nine track and field seniors and the rest of the SMU team!
The Mustangs will be back in action in two weeks for the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
