Women's Soccer Falls To No.10 Wake Forest In Its 2025 Season Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer program fell 2-0 in its 2025 season-opening match at No. 10 Wake Forest on Thursday inside Spry Stadium.

Although both programs are in the ACC, the match is considered a non-conference match.

The Mustangs (0-1-0, 0-0-0 ACC) fought hard throughout the entire match, especially on the offensive end, outshooting Wake Forest (1-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC) 7-5.

Over the first 20 minutes of the match, SMU controlled the pace of the play and led the shot differential 2-0, after Nyah Rose and Sammy Nieves had back-to-back shots go wide.

Wake Forest broke the scoreless tie in the 31st minute as Kylie Maxwell got one past SMU goalkeeper Aubrey Brown. The junior, Brown, made her first career start as a Mustang and ended the game with two saves.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Mustangs came out of the break firing on offense and outshot the Demon Deacons 5-4 in the second half.

Rose, who led the SMU in shot attempts with three, had a golden opportunity in the 51st minute as she had a point-blank shot saved by the Demon Deacons' goalkeeper.

In the 55th minute, Lydia Ungashick had a free kick from 25 yards out go just over the crossbar.

Wake Forest went up 2-0 in the 60th minute after an own goal from the Mustangs.

Rose and Lindsay Nicholson had two more good looks towards the end of the match, but were unable to get SMU on the scoreboard.

Sydney Japic, Hali Hartman and Brown were the only Mustangs to play the full 90.
