Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mustangs Shine In A 3-1 Home Victory Over Sam Houston State

DALLS (SMU) –  The SMU women's soccer program remained undefeated at home this season after claiming a 3-1 victory over Sam Houston on Sunday inside Washburne Stadium.

SMU (5-2-0, 0-0-0 ACC) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The Mustangs led Sam Houston (2-3-1, 0-0-0 CUSA) 3-0 before a late goal from the Bearkats, but it was too late as SMU held the shot advantage 19-9.

The Mustangs had the ball in the attacking zone frequently throughout the game. Sammy Nieves set the tone for the match as she found the back of the net in the 16th minute on a feed from Claire Jones.

Nieves, who leads SMU in assists with five, scored her first goal of the season.

The Mustangs continued to rattle off shots as Truth Byars got free in the box and sent a shot off the crossbar and into the net to extend the lead to 2-0.  Byars led SMU in total shots with four and scored her first goal of the season, while Jones earned her second assist of the night on the goal.

Jones joins Nieves as the only Mustangs to have a multi-assist game this year.

SMU led 2-0 at the end of the first and outshot the Bearkats 11-2 in the half.

The Bearkats were able to generate more offensive opportunities in the second half, but it did not stop the Mustangs from creating their own as well.

In the 74th minute, Lydia Ungashick set a rocket from well outside the box and slipped it right past the SHSU goalkeeper to put SMU up three. It was her second goal of the season as SMU has now scored three goals in back-to-back matches.

Sam Houston scored their lone goal in the 85th minute, but the match was all but decided.

Haven-Empey Taylor, who started the game in the net, shared the win with Aubrey Brown, who played in the second half. The pair tallied three total saves in the game.
