DALLAS (SMU) – Head Coach
Rhett Lashlee announced the addition of Riley Dodge to the SMU Football Staff on Tuesday, joining as the Mustangs' tight ends coach and pass game coordinator.
Dodge comes to the Hilltop after serving as head coach at Southlake Carroll High School for eight seasons.
"We're excited to welcome Coach Riley Dodge, his wife Alexis, and their four children to the SMU Football family," said Lashlee. "Coach Dodge is a former standout Texas high school quarterback and most recently served as the head coach at Southlake Carroll here in the Dallas Metroplex.
"He also brings experience as a college quarterback and coach in the state of Texas, and we're excited for the impact he'll have on the Hilltop as we continue building our program."
In the 2025 campaign, Dodge led the Dragons to a 14-1 record with an unblemished district record of 8-0. At the helm of the Dragons from 2018-2025, the Southlake native posted a 108-10 record, won seven district championships and five regional titles and made two state championship game appearances. In 2019, he was named the Tom Landry Coach of the Year. In the following year, Dodge was recognized as the 6A Coach of the Year.
"I'm excited to join the staff at SMU and be part of the culture and momentum Coach Lashlee has built," Dodge said. "This is a special place with great people, and I'm fired up to get to work."
Prior to Carroll, Dodge worked as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M and as an offensive quality control coach at the University of Texas. With a history of developing high-level players from the state of Texas, Dodge coached SMU tight end
RJ Maryland at Carroll, building the foundation for Maryland to record the most career receiving yards by any tight end in SMU history. As a head coach, he also helped develop quarterback Quinn Ewers and wide receiver Brock Boyd.
Before his coaching career, Dodge was a member of the team that won three state championships at Southlake Carroll. As the starting quarterback, he was selected as the Texas High School Player of the Year in both 2006 and 2007. In 2006, he also earned the title of the MaxPreps National Player of the Year after leading his team to an undefeated season and a state championship. Dodge went on to play collegiately at North Texas and McNeese State.
