Oct 15 | Football
DALLAS, Texas (SMU) – SMU's dynamic tandem of quarterback Kevin Jennings and Yamir Knight have been named to the Pony Express Award Watchlist, the organization announced Thursday.
Â
The Pony Express Award is a regular season award that honors the best tandem in college football, regardless of position. Craig James and Eric Dickerson created the award to celebrate selflessness, collaboration, and true team excellence.
Â
Jennings, the senior from South Oak Cliff High School, is averaging 317.6 yards per game through the air, the most in the ACC and No. 2 in the country. Knight, his top target, has hauled in a team-high 367 yards, averaging 73.4 per contest. The Delaware native also brings in 5.80 receptions per game.
Â
The duo has helped lift the Mustang offense to one of the most prolific in all of college football. SMU ranks third in the country in passing offense (341.0 ypg), third in the ACC in total offense (479.2 ypg) and No. 6 in the nation in passing efficiency (183.73).
Â
The award winners will be announced in December.
Â
ABOUT THE PONY EXPRESS AWARD
The two former running backs, who made up the original Pony Express, have always been about team success over individual success. It's how they were coached from a young age through high school, as SMU teammates and eventually the NFL. A "we" honor in a "me" era, the Pony Express Award is presented annually to the most dynamic and selfless tandem in college football. While on-field performance certainly matters, this recognition is rooted in an unshakable team-first mindset.
Â
Whether it's a QB and WR with undeniable chemistry, two offensive linemen paving the way down the field, or a linebacker-safety combo relentlessly anchoring the defense, the award looks for tandems who embody the spirit of The Pony Express Award.
