DALLAS (SMU) – [RV/RV] SMU men's swimming and diving team will travel to Atlanta, Georgia, to compete in its second ACC Championships at the McAuley Aquatic Center on Feb. 15-21. SMU will participate in the diving events on Feb. 15-17. On Feb. 17-21, the Mustangs will compete in swimming events.
In the final dual meet of the season, SMU claimed a commanding victory over Utah, ending with final team scores of 173-127. The Mustangs took home ten event wins, with three swimmers earning multiple first-place finishes. Freshman Francis Brennan won both the 100 free (44.40) and the 200 free (1:35.69). Junior Jack Berube swept the backstroke events, posting a time of 46.98 in the 100 back and 1:43.95 in the 200 back. Captain Sage Sungail threw down a time of 20.16 in the 50 free, securing the win. Along with Benjamin Chateigner, Harold Lockhart and Eli Likins, Sungail won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:20.35. SMU had four additional event wins: Kristaps Mikelsons in the 100 breast (55.21), Joe Umhofer in the 200 breast (1:59.41), Grant Cates on 3-meter (313.43) and Jack Moore in the 200 IM (1:48.17).
NOT SMU'S FIRST ACC RODEO
In their debut season, the Mustangs traveled to Greensboro, N.C., to compete at their first ever ACC Swimming & Diving Championships. SMU made a statement on day one with Luke Sitz earning a silver medal on 3-meter as a freshman. The diver also found success on 1-meter, claiming a bronze medal with a score of 375.30. On the same night, the 200 free relay team of Lance Butler, Sage Sungail, Harold Lockhart and Joe Rusnock threw down a new school record with their time of 1:16.74. Day three of the competition saw two current Mustangs, Lockhart and Sage Sungail, make the 200 free finals with times of 1:33.94 and 1:34.08, respectively. The following day, Jack Berube set a new school record in the 100 back with a time of 45.74. In the 400 medley relay, Berube, along with Lockhart, Lance Butler and Russell Exum, marked another SMU record after touching the wall in 3:05.89. The Mustangs finished the conference championships in 11th place with a point total of 434.
TOP OF THE CHARTS
Currently, the Mustangs have 10 performances on this season's NCAA top-30 times list, including all five relays. In the 800 free relay, the squad consisting of Brennan/Chateigner/Forrest/Sungail currently holds 12th place in the nation and fourth in the ACC with a time of 6:16.30. The team of Sungail/Lockhart/Likins/Chateigner threw down a school record-breaking time of 2:48.72 in the 400 free relay, earning them 12th nationally. The same relay team ranks 22nd in the nation with a 200 free relay time of 1:16.95. A Mustang ranks in the top 30 nationally in the 200 back: Jack Berube (1:40.15, 17th NCAA, 5th ACC).
In the 400 medley relay, Berube/Mikelsons/Sungail/Chateigner touched the wall in 3:05.89, good for 24nd in the nation. The same squad ranks 26th in the NCAA in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:24.51. Junior Kristaps Mikelsons places 28th in the NCAA in the 100 breast with a time of 51.96. In the 200 breast, Mikelsons ranks 30th with a time of 1:53.69. In the NCAA, Luke Sitz holds 21st place on 1-meter (404.05) and eighth place on 3-meter (433.05), both conference-leading performances.
FRESH INK IN THE RECORD BOOK
The 2025-26 roster has made their mark in SMU program history, with eight records being owned by active members of the squad. Last season, junior Jack Berube broke his father, Ryan Berube's, 100 back record, throwing down a time of 45.74. At the 2025 SMU Invite, the Dallas native shattered his own 200 back record of 1:40.37 after recording a time of 1:40.15. Berube was also a member of the SMU record-holding relay squads, swimming the fastest 200 medley (1:24.35) and 400 medley relay (3:06.45) in program history in 2024.Â
On 1-meter, sophomore Luke Sitz earned a new pool record at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center with a 404.5 mark at the SMU Invite. On 3-meter, the All-American broke a personal and SMU record at the 2025 USA Diving Winter Nationals with a score of 437.50.Â
Seniors Sage Sungail and Ward Lockhart have made Mustang history with both being key members of the record-breaking 200 free relay (1:16.74), 400 free relay (2:48.72) and 800 free relay (6:14.24). Senior Jack Forrest was also a part of the 800 free relay with Sungail and Lockhart. Sungail also joined Jack Berube in the fastest 400 medley relay at SMU. The second half of the 400 free relay team was junior Eli Likins and sophomore Benjamin Chateigner.Â
At the 2025 European Aquatics Short Course Championships, junior Kristaps Mikelsons set three new Latvian records: 100m breast (58.91), 200m breast (2:07.91) and 200m IM (1:56.73). Freshman Aubrey Jaya set an Indonesian record at the Southeast Asian Games, recording a 7:27.17 in the 800m free relay.
