Mustangs Fall In ACC Championship Final To No. 1 Stanford

RESULTS

WILMINGTON, N.C. – SMU women's golf fell to No. 1 Stanford in the final of the ACC Women's Golf Championship, 3-0, on Sunday at Porters Neck Golf Course.

"It wasn't the result we were hoping for, but I'm incredibly proud of this group and everything we accomplished this week," said head coach Lauren Mason. "From finishing 14th out of 15 teams in our first ACC appearance last year to competing in the championship match this season, this team has put in the work and showed up ready to compete."

"While today didn't go our way, it's still a big step in the right direction," remarked Mason. "We've played some great golf all season, and it was rewarding to see it come together at the right time."

"We struggled to get off to a strong start, and Stanford came out hot from the opening hole" added Mason "A few early three-putts that led to bogeys put us behind, and against a team with some of the top players in the world, that's tough to overcome."

"There's still over a month left in our season, and we're excited for what's ahead. Regionals are up next, and we're looking forward to the selection show on April 29. We learned a lot this week, and we're confident we can use the  experience from this week to our advantage as we prepare for the NCAA Championship in May," concluded Mason..

SMU advanced to the championship after earning the No. 2 seed by finishing second in 54 holes of stroke play. The team earned a bye and met North Carolina in the semifinals. They won that pairing 3-1 with wins from Grace Jin, Celine Chen, and Kirra St-Laurent.

In the final, the Mustangs matched up with Stanford, the No. 1 seed and top ranked team in the country. Jin dropped the first point of the day, 4&3, to Meja Oretengren, a top 10 ranked golfer in the country.

Mackenzie Lee fell 3&2 to Megha Ganne, the seventh-ranked national golfer by Scoreboard. Stanford had a 2-0 after that match with an edge in the remaining matchups.

Emily Odwin dropped her match with No.6 ranked ACC Individual champion Paula Martin Sampedro, 4&3 to clinch the match for Stanford.  Kirra St-Laurent trailed Kelly Xu 3up with three holes to play in an unfinished match and Celine Chen was locked in a battle with fifth-ranked Andrea Revuelta trailing by one hole heading to 18;

With their impressive ACC Championship finish, the Mustangs have top-two conference showings in three of the last four years.

The Mustangs await their NCAA Regional destination announced April 29 at noon on the Golf Channel. The potential sites are Ann Arbor, Michigan, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Simpsonville, Kentucky, Stanford, California, Tallahassee, Florida, and Waco, Texas.
