DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer program jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 2-0 victory over Houston Christian on Sunday inside Washburne Stadium.
The Mustangs (4-1-1, 0-0-0 ACC) controlled the pace of play for the majority of the night, outshooting Houston Christian (1-3-1, 0-0-0 SLC) 20-4. SMU scored early off the foot of
Maleeya Martin, while
Londynn Hagan added the insurance goal late in the first half.
The Mustangs stayed within the attacking zone all night, as SMU tallied seven on goal to HCU's one.
Kaia Samuelsen Elverum,
Zoe Parkhurst,
Brooke Bunton, Martin and
Kaylee Noble contributed at least two shots, Noble with five.
SMU's defense forced multiple turnovers in the attacking zone, especially in the first half as the Mustangs outshouted the Huskies 13-1 in the period. It was the Mustangs' fourth shutout of the season as SMU remained unbeaten at home this year (4-0-1).
The Mustangs got out to a quick start, rattling off five shots in the first 12 minutes. In the 14th minute,
Maleeya Martin sent a shot that nailed the top right of the net to put SMU up by one, on a feed from
Kaylee Noble. This is Martin's first goal of her career, while Noble had the lone assist of the evening.
Continuing to push the pace,
Londynn Hagan showcased her speed, scoring a breakaway goal in the 38th minute. The freshman netted her second goal of the season to reach the game's final score.Â
Up 2-0 going into the second, SMU continued to stifle any offensive attack from HCU and held on for the shutout victory.Â
The match was the Mustangs' 27th shutout under Nelson as SMU has now outscored its opponents 13-1 at home this season.
