Jonathan McGill enters his first season as the Mustangs' assistant secondary coach in 2026.
McGill wrapped a successful playing career for SMU in 2024, highlighted by the team going 11-3, 8-0 in its first season in the ACC and making the College Football Playoff for the first time.
A leader of the defense and secondary from 2023-24, McGill was a two-time team captain for the Mustangs. He was an all-conference selection in both the ACC and the AAC.
A respected defensive leader and former collegiate standout whose football journey spans elite high school, Power Five, and ACC competition. A native of Coppell, Texas, McGill was a four-year varsity starter at Coppell High School, earning District Defensive MVP honors and recognition as one of the top defensive backs in Texas.
McGill began his collegiate career at Stanford Cardinal football, where he developed into a team captain and veteran defensive back known for his football IQ, versatility, and leadership. During his Stanford career, he played multiple positions in the secondary and emerged as one of the team’s most dependable defenders.
