St. Louis, Mo. -- The fourth-ranked SMU men's soccer team once again dominated the Missouri Valley Conference post-season awards, as announced at the MVC Tournament banquet Thursday night in St. Louis, Mo. As the 2002 MVC regular-season champions, the Mustangs placed three players on the All-MVC first team, one on the second team, and took home the Player of the Year and Coach of the Year honors.
Senior midfielder Diego Walsh earned his second Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year title. The native of Miami, Fla., also collected the MVC Player of the Year honor in 2000. SMU head coach Schellas Hyndman notched his sixth consecutive Coach of the Year honors (three with the WAC, three with the MVC). SMU representatives on the All-MVC first team include Walsh, senior defender Toti Suarez and senior defender Kevin Friedland. All-MVC second team honors were given to sophomore defender Ugo Ihemelu and junior midfielder Kevin Hudson. Freshman midfielder David Chun received All-MVC honorable mention honors.
Three Mustangs were named to the MVC's All-Newcomer team: Kellan Zindel, Duke Hashimoto, and Colin Clark.
Top-seed SMU (15-1-3) looks to reach the finals of the MVC Tournament Friday night with a contest vs. fifth-seed Bradley (13-4-4) beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Sportport in Maryland Heights, Mo.
