SMU Loses at Kansas
Oct 2 | Football
SMU (0-4, 0-1 WAC) lost its fourth consecutive game in a non-conference contest at Kansas Saturday. The Jayhawks overcame a 9-0 deficit and scored 27 unanswered points to improve to 2-3 this season.
"Every one of our players gave solid effort again today," said SMU coach Mike Cavan. "We still are making mistakes that are costing us dearly. The lack of a running game really concerns me. There's nothing you can do except get back to work on Monday and prepare for UTEP."
Kansas held the ball for 33:38 and had 384 yards. Jayhawk QB Dylen Smith was 19-for-34 for 215 yards. He had two touchdown passes and was intercepted three times.
Sophomore QB Josh McCown, who played the whole way for SMU, was 15 of 30 for 190 yards and one touchdown, an 18-yard pass to Chris Cunningham. The true freshman Cunningham was the Mustangs' top offensive threat, gaining 102 all-purpose yards (81 receiving, 21 on a kickoff return).
Despite McCown's solid afternoon, the struggles on offense continued for the Ponies against Kansas. SMU accumulated 268 total yards the entire day and just 137 after the first quarter. The Mustangs were also limited to 1 of 13 on third down conversions.
Defensively, senior LB Jason Simonton continued to perform at an all-star level registering 11 tackles, all of which were unassisted. Senior S Tracy Hart had two interceptions to bring his career total to nine. It was the third multiple interception game of Hart's college career.
SMU scored on two of its first three possessions, first on McCown's TD strike to Cunningham and second on Adam Walterscheid's first career field goal (a 27-yarder). Kansas answered after it was sparked by a 26-yard pass from punter Joey Pelfanio to Tyrus Fontenot on a fake punt from its own 36-yardline. The Jayhawks scored twice in the second quarter to lead at halftime, 13-9. Kansas added 14 more points in the second stanza to win by 18.
