SMU fell to 0-2 after a 53-19 loss to Tulane (1-1) in New Orleans. The Mustangs found themselves down 23-0 by the seven-minute mark of the first quarter and could not recover. Tulane registered 539 yards of total offense - 404 through the air - en route to its seventh consecutive home victory.
"I did a poor job of coaching," said SMU head coach Mike Cavan. "Put the blame on me. Did you see us play? I did a poor job of getting us ready for their passing game. I wasn't pleased with anything, maybe Johnnie Freeman. He did a good job."
Offensively, SMU had 414 yards. True freshman Johnnie Freeman had seven carries for 146 yards, including a 61-yard TD run on his first collegiate carry in the second quarter to make the score 29-12. Josh McCown was SMU's leading passer, completing 10 of 21 for 138 yards and one touchdown.
Several of SMU's offensive freshmen showed they've made progress. In addition to Freeman's scoring play, freshman Cody Cardwell was on the receiving end of his first career touchdown, a 33-yarder from McCown. In the third quarter, rookie QB Kelan Luker (6-of-18-2 interceptions) connected on a 38-yard scoring strike to freshman Chris Cunningham.
Tulane's Patrick Ramsey was 32-for-49 through the air for 404 yards and three TDs. JaJuan Dawson established Tulane and Conference USA records with 16 receptions and 218 receiving yards.
The game was similar to the 1998 contest between the two schools. In that contest, Tulane jumped ahead 31-0 before SMU rallied to score 21 points in the last 19 minutes.
The Mustangs will enjoy their first open week since the 1997 season on September 18. SMU returns to action on September 25 in the Cotton Bowl vs. Hawaii on Family Weekend. Kickoff is set for 2:00 PM Central time.
