Quotes From Mike Cavan's Coaches Luncheon

The following are quotes from Mike Cavan's Coaches Luncheon held Monday.
Cavan On the Hawaii game:
"We fell behind early in the game, just as we have done for most of the year. I felt that we played well during the second and third
quarters. Defensively, we finally got a few turnovers, but I thought that we should have had more than just the one interception and fumble
recovery. We came back from a 17 point deficit and had some opportunities, but we did not capitalize. I was also pleased with our special teams ,especially our coverage teams and our field goal team.
I thought Jacob Crowley really came through for us this week."
Cavan on the off week:
"We had an opportunity to work on ourselves this week. We stressed fundamentals and tried to correct some little things that have cost
us this year."
"There are going to be some changes this week. Chase Schavrda is going to rotate in with the defensive ends so we can try to get more
pressure on the quarterback. The best pass defense is a pass rush. We also have moved Billy Ford to an outside receiver position with Johnnie
Freeman, and moved Cody Schavrda and Chris Cunningham to the inside receiver positions."
Cavan on the play of Billy Ford:
"Billy has been a pleasant surprise for us this year. He is a big target for our quarterbacks and uses that to make plays for us. He
inside passing games."
Cavan on the Nevada game:
"We need to get a win and continue to show improvement before we can look further down the road. Once we win a football game, then we can start building for the rest of the season."
"Nevada has a good quarterback and receiving corps. They can really move the ball. They are a lot like us in that they are young on
both sides of the ball. Their defense has played great at times, but they have also had some major meltdowns as well. This week's game will
come down to who can make the plays."
Cavan on quarterback David Page
"Page played very well in his first game starting for us. He showed great leadership ability and the other guys really rallied around
him. He made good decisions and didn't force the ball, and by doing that he made use of other options to move the ball. He will get
better with experience."
Quarterback David Page on his comfort level entering Saturday's game:
"Starting last week against Hawaii on the road really helped me. I was nervous in the first quarter, but after that I felt settled
and I think that will carry over into this week's game."
Page on becoming the starter:
"I came to SMU to play and I have worked very hard to earn that opportunity. This summer, Josh (McCown) helped me to learn the
offense and he has been there for me ever since. He has been supportive of me and has always been there when I had a question."
Page on choosing to play at SMU:
"I came to SMU because of its academic reputation and its business school. As for football, I was familiar with Coach Kueck's offense
and knew that was the type of system I wanted to play in."
Page on the changes at wide receiver:
"I think that Ford and Freeman will help spread the defenses for us and open up our inside passing and running game."
