Dallas, Texas -- SMU football head coach Mike Cavan held his media luncheon Monday as the Mustangs prepare for a road trip to Houston to battle the Rice Owls.
The following are quotes from the media luncheon.
Head Coach Mike Cavan on last week's win against Nevada:
"We were a very fragile football team, confidence wise, but Saturday was a positive step forward for us"
On the Nevada game:
"Defensively, we played better. We caused turnovers, four interceptions and a fumble. For the most part, it was a tremendous improvement on what we've done in the past few weeks."
"Offensively, we still had too many mistakes. We could have scored more points, but you just don't gain instaneously a lot of confidence. It comes over a period of time."
"Overall, it's what the doctor ordered. We needed a win, and we got a win."
On individual play:
"Johnnie Freeman is continually improving in practice, and is carrying it over to the ball game."
"I was also pleased with David Page. He continued to play well for us."
"Getting Moodley on the field was very good for us. He was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week this week.""
"Schavrda caused some problems at defenive end. He really played hard for us out there."
On playing Rice:
"Until we get there and play, and learn the speed of the game, we won't fully be ready for the triple option. The quicker we learn that, the better we will play."
"That's the problem, you just can't simulate the triple option in practice at full speed."
Linebacker Vic Viloria on the Nevada win:
"We had a good game. We played with a lot of enthusiasm, and had fun out there."
"Our confidence level is going to get higher and higher with every game we win."
On the importance of the Rice game:
"It's going to be a change. Coach Schumann does a great job getting us ready to play defense against option teams."
"It will give the front seven more of an opportunity to be part of the game."
