DALLAS, TEXAS - SMU Director of Athletics Jim Copeland announced today his decision to release head football coach Mike Cavan, effective at the end of the season. Cavan will coach the final two games of the year.
"I appreciate Mike's efforts while here at SMU," said Copeland. "He has represented the university with class, led us to some great wins and increased the emphasis on the academic success of his athletes. I wish him the best in all his future endeavors.
"This is the right time to make a change in the leadership of our football program. For more than a year now, we have been working on a plan that assures winning programs in football and basketball as well as other sports. We will play at the highest level and win consistently in all sports while operating with the highest integrity."
Copeland will begin a national search immediately for Cavan's successor and anticipates naming a replacement by the middle of December.
"Ford Stadium, the Loyd All-Sports Center, a vibrant and committed Mustang Club and a top-notch university in a great city provide the assets to build a winning football program," said Copeland.
Cavan became the school's 14th head football coach on December 20, 1996, replacing Tom Rossley. He has compiled a 17-27 record at SMU in his five seasons at the school. The Mustangs, presently 3-6 and 3-4 in Western Athletic Conference play, host Rice this Saturday then close the season at North Carolina on Dec. 1.
