The No. 19 SMU men's swimming & diving team fell to the No. 1 ranked team in the land, Texas, Saturday afternoon, 146.5-115.5.
The Mustangs fell behind early, and despite a late comeback, were unable to overcome the Longhorns' early lead. On the day, SMU finished first in four of the 15 events that were competed in, with all wins coming in succession during the Ponies late comeback.
Senior Bart Wickard won the 200 Backstroke with a time of 1:50.49. Senior captain Steve Barnes won SMU's second straight event in the next heat, finishing first in the 500 Free with a time of 4:31.38. Tim Carlson made it three straight wins for the Mustangs with his time of 2:05.04 in the 200 Breaststroke. The 400 free relay team of Brandon Jernigan, Matt Weghorst, Steve Kemmerling, and Michael Jacobsson made it four in a row with their 3:01.43 time.
Diver Brice Dumais finished third and second in the one-meter and three-meter diving competition, respectively. Dumais was competing against two brothers, Justin Dumais and Troy Dumais, both of whom dive for Texas.
With the loss, SMU falls to 3-4 on the year and will next be in action Feb. 22-24 when it travels to Oakland, Mich. to compete in the National Independent Conference Championships.
