Arguably the most prolific season in the history of SMU men's tennis came to an end Monday as SMU's Jon Wallmark and Johan Brunstrom lost in the NCAA Doubles Championship match to Georgia's Matias Boeker and Travis Parrott, 6-4, 7-5, in Athens, Ga. The duo was looking for its second grand slam title of the season. Monday's loss came less than a week removed from SMU's 4-0 loss to Georgia in the NCAA team final four.
The dynamic duo fell behind early, dropping the first set 6-4. Up early 4-2, SMU lost momentum as Georgia came back to go ahead 5-4. The set was then delayed by a 15 minute rain delay with Boeker and Parrott leading the Mustang tandem 5-4. When play resumed, the Bulldog team quickly captured the first set 6-4.
Wallmark and Brunstrom fought back in the neck-and-neck second set. Down 1-0 early, Wallmark and Brunstrom rallied to tie the match at two all. Boeker and Parrot went ahead 3-2 before Wallmark and Brunstrom caught fire, winning the next two points to go ahead, 4-3. The see-sawing continued as Boeker and Parrot went ahead 5-4, before the SMU tandem rallied again to tie at five. Up 6-5, Boeker and Parrott closed the deal and went on for the victory in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.
Wallmark and Brunstrom were looking for their second national title of the 2000-01 season. In February, the tandem defeated VCU's Florian Marquardt and Frank Moser in straight sets to capture college tennis' second leg of the grand slam at the Rolex Indoor Tennis Championships in Dallas. The tandem ends the year 25-5, giving them the sixth best winning percentage in school history at .833. Wallmark and Brunstrom's 25 wins leaves them tied for second all-time for doubles wins in a season at SMU. Wallmark also captured 25 wins last year with former SMU great Toby Hansson.
The Georgia victory completed the triple crown win for the Bulldogs at this year's NCAA Championships. The Bulldogs won the team title and prior to the doubles championships, Boeker captured the singles title in straight sets over Virginia's Brian Vahaly. With all three victories, Boeker became only the third college tennis player ever to accomplish that feat in season.
The championship loss ends the most prolific career in SMU tennis history for Wallmark. The senior's four year reign on the hilltop ends with the most singles wins ever at SMU (111) and leaves him in a tie for the most doubles wins in school history with 94. Wallmark's spirited third set rally lifted SMU over Arkansas in this year's NCAA regional final on May 13, landing them in the Sweet 16 where they went on to advance to the NCAA final four for the first time since 1986.
The championship match also ends arguably the greatest season ever at SMU. On the year, SMU made its first NCAA team final four appearance since 1986, won two national titles (Wallmark/Brunstrom(1), Genius Chidzikwe (1)), and ended the season with the second best winning percentage in school history at .899.
