DALLAS, TEXAS -- SMU junior linebacker Vic Viloria was named today to the watch list for the 2001 Butkus Award, presented to the nation's top college linebacker. The award is presented by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc.
Viloria, a second-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection last year, led the conference with 130 tackles in 2000. The Chalmette, La., native had eight games last season with at least 10 tackles, including a career-high 16 at Fresno State. He also posted 10 tackles for loss and two sacks.
"It is great for Vic to be named to the Butkus Award watch list," said Mustang head coach Mike Cavan. "He brings great intensity to the game and makes plays all over the field. If there is someone who plays hader than Vic, I've never seen him."
Viloria is one of 69 players on the list, which will be trimmed to 10 semi-finalists on Thursday, Oct. 18. Three finalists will be chosen on Thursday, Nov. 8, and the winner will be announced on Friday, Dec. 7.
