DALLAS, TEXAS -- SMU junior running back Kris Briggs was named today as one of the preseason candidates for the 2001 Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation's top college running back.
Briggs, a Carthage, Texas native, ranked third in the Western Athletic Conference a year ago with 828 yards on the ground and was a second team all-conference pick. He is the league's second leading returning rusher in 2001. Briggs also ranked fourth nationally among all running backs last season with 38 receptions. He enters his junior season ranked 19th on the school's all-time rushing list with 1,350 yards and could break into the top 10 if he duplicates his total from last year.
"It is a great honor for Kris to be recognized," said Mustang head coach Mike Cavan. "He is a hard worker both on and off the field. He has really taken on a leadership role on this team and we are looking for good things from him this season."
Briggs is one of 43 candidates for the award, presented by the SMU Athletic Forum. Eight semifinalists for the award will be named on Nov. 8 and the winner will be announced live on ESPN's Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Thursday, Dec. 6. The Doak Walker Presentation Banquet will be held at The Fairmont Hotel in Dallas on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002.
The Doak Walker Award is named after the former SMU great, who became the first college player to win the Heisman Trophy as a junior in 1948.
