The No. 9 SMU men's tennis team got off to a successful start Friday, defeating Hawaii-Pacific, 5-2, in the first action of the 2002 season.
SMU captured the doubles point, as the No. 2 team of Ryan Mauck and Krystian Pfeiffer won 8-5. SMU's No. 3 tandem of sophomore Lukasz Senczyszyn and freshman-redshirt Gwinyai Chingoka also won, with a score of 8-2.
In singles play, the Mustangs won four the six matches contested, led by No. 1 player Pfeiffer, who was a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 winner. No. 3 player Alexis Rudzinski returned to action with an impressive 6-4, 7-5 win, while both Chingoka and junior-transfer Eric Cohn won to secure the win.
With the win, SMU improves to 1-0 on the year and will travel to Houston, Texas next weekend for the Rice Indoors Invitational.
