SMU Practices Once on Sunday

DALLAS, TEXAS -- The SMU football team worked out once on Sunday at the Pettus Practice Fields adjacent to Gerald J. Ford Stadium. The two-hour workout in shells was devoted entirely to special teams play.
"It was a good day," said SMU head coach Phil Bennett. "We got a lot accomplished. This part of the game (special teams) is just as important as offense and defense. So many times throughout a football season you will see games come down to the kicking game. That is why we did what we did today."
The Mustangs worked on punt coverage and punt return and block as well as kickoff coverage and return. Freshman placekicker Chris McMurtray had a good day on kickoffs, booting eight of his 10 attempts into the end zone.
SMU closed the practice with work on field goals. McMurtray made five of his eight attempts, including kicks from 42 and 47 yards. Sophomore strong safety Alvin Nnabuife broke through and blocked one attempt.
"McMurtray has a very strong leg," Bennett said. "He showed it today. He could become a very valuable weapon for us."
The Mustangs resume two-a-days on Monday with morning and afternoon workouts. SMU will don pads for the first time this fall on Tuesday.
