DALLAS, TEXAS -- The SMU football team got back to work on Monday with a pair of two-hour practices in shells at the Pettus Practice Fields adjacent to Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
"The defense looked very good today," said SMU head coach Phil Bennett. "They were very sharp. We have a chance to be very good on that side of the ball."
Kevin Garrett, Rico Harris and Alvin Nnabuife all recorded interceptions in skeleton passing or 11-on-11 drills. During the team session of the afternoon workout, the defense also recorded three sacks.
SMU will practice in full pads for the first time this fall on Tuesday morning when preseason camp continues.
In one other football note, Gerald J. Ford, the man whose SMU's football stadium is named after, spoke to the team on Monday evening. Bennett will have other prominent people from the SMU family speak to the team during two-a-days, including Don and Lance McIlhenny, Craig James, Bobby Leach and Lamar Hunt.
