DALLAS, TEXAS -- The SMU Mustangs continued two-a-day practices in preparation for the 2002 season Friday at the Pettus Practice Fields on the Hilltop. The Mustangs worked out for two hours in full pads during both the morning and afternoon.
SMU will holds its first full scrimmage of the fall on Saturday evening at Gerald J. Ford Stadium at 6:00 p.m. The scrimmage is open to the public.
"We had a good afternoon practice," said first-year SMU head coach Phil Bennett. "The defense bowed up out there and the offense was effective at times."
Highlights of the team portion of the afternoon session included a long run by ShanDerrick Charles and a 25-yard TD scramble by quarterback Tate Wallis. D.D. Johnson had a pair of big hits for the defense while Kevin Garrett and Rico Harris blocked field goal attempts.
The workout closed when Wallis hit Chris Cunningham with a short pass and Cunningham fought his way into the end zone from four yards out.
SMU will open the Bennett Era two weeks from tomorrow, on Aug. 31, against Navy in Ford Stadium. Kickoff for the season opener is set for 7:00 p.m.
