WACO (SMU) - Despite outgaining their opponent 204-182, the SMU Mustangs dropped a tough 10-7 decision to the Baylor Bears Saturday, September 12, at Floyd Casey Stadium. SMU held the Bears to just 182 yards of total offense, but turnovers again proved costly as BU's recorded two scoring drives on a combined 24 yards.
SMU opened the game by scoring first for the second time this season as Richard Bartel hit Matt Rushbrook on a five-yard scoring pass early in the second quarter. Baylor scored a field goal off an SMU mistake before the break, making the score 7-3 at intermission. The Bears scored early in the third quarter after another Mustang miscue, as Rash Armstrong scampered in from four yards out for the final 10-7 margin.
Keylon Kincade rushed for a game-high 113 yards on 30 carries and now has 1,964 career yards on the Hilltop. He now stands in 11th place on the SMU career rushing charts, passing David Bostick (1,855), Rodnick Phillips (1,857) and Doak Walker (1,954) against the Bears.
D.D. Johnson and Brian Bischoff led the SMU defense, netting 11 and 10 tackles respectively.
Up next for SMU is Oklahoma State, as the Cowboys visit Gerald J. Ford Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 20, in the Ponies' home opener.
