SMU Loses Home Opener

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs dropped to 0-3 on the season on Saturday, Sept. 20, as they fell, 52-6, to the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
OSU's Rashaun Woods set an NCAA record with seven touchdown catches, and finished with 232 yards on 13 grabs. Woods, a 6-2 All-American, had five TDs at the half, and all passes came via Cowboy quarterback Josh Fields.
"He's a load," said SMU coach Phil Bennett. "He made several of his catches in zone and double coverage. He's just a great receiver. If a ball is in his vicinity, he's going to catch it."
Matt Rushbrook recorded SMU's lone score on a five-yard reception in the third quarter. Rushbrook has all three of SMU's scores on the year. Tate Wallis replaced Richard Bartel at quarterback and finished with 126 yards passing.
Despite the point disparity, the yardage battle was much closer as OSU outgained SMU 398-233.
"We really hurt ourselves with field position," said Bennett. "Playing on a short field is always tough. Six of their eight scoring drives were less than 35 yards. They had 398 yards of total offense, which is not a lot of yards for 52 points. We've got to do a better job in that area."
"We played hard and we didn't quit. I was proud of our guys for that. It's my job to get this team better and I'm going to do that. I told our team we're 0-3 in the Big 12, but 0-0 in the WAC."
SMU returns to the field next week, as the Ponies travel to Reno to battle Nevada on Sept. 27.
