DALLAS - SMU?s Jamey Harper intercepted a pass at the goal line on Tulsa?s only overtime possession and Cedrick Dorsey responded with a 25-yard touchdown run in the extra frame to preserve the Mustangs' 41-35 victory over Tulsa on Saturday.
Dorsey rushed 10 times for 94 yards as SMU (2-7, 2-4 WAC) beat Tulsa for the eighth time in their last nine meetings.
Tulsa (2-7, 1-4) forced the overtime on quarterback James Killian's second 1-yard TD run of the game and his 2-point conversion pass to Garret Mills with 2:38 left.
SMU took a 35-24 lead on Tony Eckert's 12-yard touchdown pass to Reynaldo Pellerin with 10:48 left. Eckert was 15-of-25 for 201 yards and a score.
The Mustangs built a 24-7 lead at halftime as fullback Derron Brown had rushing touchdowns of 1 and 3 yards. SMU's improved to 5-0 under Phil Bennett when scoring 24 or more points.
SMU also amassed 390 yards of total offense, the most for an SMU team since it rolled up 427 yards in the 2002 season finale also against Tulsa.
Defensively, Harper led SMU with nine tackles, while Justin Rogers added two-and-a-half sacks.
?I hope it gives (our players) confidence,? said Bennett. ?I am really proud of how they fought through some adversity. They all kept themselves going and played all 60 minutes. I had told them before the game that I don?t care about the score, but to play hard every play and they did that today.?
Wide receiver Bobby Chase added, ?We had been so close and today I feel we really grew up. We want to take the next step and I feel there will be good things happening to us in the future.?
