Nov. 5, 2005

Final Stats | Quotes

DALLAS (AP) - DeMyron Martin rushed for 171 yards and a touchdown in SMU's 27-7 victory against Rice on Saturday. The loss extended the Owls' nation-leading losing streak to 14 games.

Rice's last victory came against SMU last year, and the Owls had beaten the Mustangs three straight times.

Martin had 128 of his yards in the second half, and his 1-yard scoring run put the Mustangs (3-6, 2-4 Conference USA) ahead 27-0 early in the fourth quarter.

Rice (0-8, 0-3) was plagued by mistakes. The Owls had a touchdown nullified by a penalty and failed to convert on fourth-and-1 from the SMU 1-yard line when starting quarterback Joel Armstrong fumbled.

Quarterback Jerad Romo's 2-yard touchdown run gave SMU a 20-0 lead with 5:54 left before halftime and capped a 15-play, 92-yard drive. Romo finished 9-of-17 passing for 111 yards and added 51 rushing yards.

Chris McMurtray set an SMU record with his 11th consecutive field goal on a career-long 48-yarder for a 13-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Mustangs' Rolando Humphrey recovered a muffed punt by the Owls' Brandon King at the Rice 6 to set up the first SMU score. Mustangs receiver Reynaldo Pellerin scored on a reverse on the next play.

Only a 5-yard touchdown pass from Chase Clement to Andy Hall with 7:09 left in the game prevented SMU from registering its first shutout since 1998.

Armstrong and Clement split time at quarterback for Rice. They combined to complete just 10 of 31 passes for 64 yards.

SMU, which allowed 501 yards in last year's 44-10 loss to Rice, outgained the Owls 391-230.
