Alex Skrypko toppled several top players en route to the final round of the ITA Regionals where he faced Bojan Szumanski of Texas Tech. The Regional took place over the weekend and first part of the week at TCU.
"It has been really exciting to watch him play this well against some of the top players in the country," head coach Carl Neufeld said.
For the second year in a row, the Mustangs will be sending someone to the ITA National Indoor meet which begins Nov. 2 this year.
"It is really great to have someone in the finals of this tournament," Neufeld noted. "This is one of the toughest regions and it is very exciting to see how Alex's game has developed. I'm really proud of how he has been playing. He will get to play against the best 32 players in the country at the Indoor Championships."
As the No. 3 seed in the tournament, Skrypko began play with a bye in the Round of 128. He cruised to a 6-0, 6-1, win over Greg Jones of Texas Tech in the Round of 64 and then toppled Texas' No. 1 singles player, Miguel Reyes Varela, in the Round of 32 in a 6-3, 7-6 (3) decision. He held his own in the Round of 16 as he defeated the No. 1 player from Rice, Ben Harknett, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. He commanded a, 7-5, 6-3 win over Dimitrio Martinez over Texas Tech in the quarterfinal rounds to advance to the semifinals. Guaranteeing a spot in the ITA National Indoor, Skrypko took the 7-5, 6-1 decision over Milan Mihailovic of Texas, advancing to the final round where he would face Szumanski of Texas Tech. Skrypko was unable to topple Szumanski as he fell, 6-3, 6-4.
In the Round of 128, Federico Murgier defeated Daniel Omana of UTA, 6-1, 6-2 and then advanced to the Round of 64 where he took the, 6-3, 6-3, win from David Galic of Baylor. He was unable to push past Piotr Banas (ULL) in the Round of 32, 7-6, 0-6, 7-6.
Chris Hooshyar received a bye in the Round of 128 and then fell to TCU's Chris Biro, 6-3, 6-3, in the Round of 64. In the second round of consolations, he took the win over Kody Duplechin of Lamar, 6-0, 6-2. He fell to Julien Lousao (SEL) in the third round with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (11-9) decision. Ryan Hooker was unable to overcome Ty Lunn of UTSA in the Round of 128 as he fell, 7-6(5), 6-2. Hooker received byes in the first and second rounds of consolation. In the third round, he fell to Jorge Delgado (ULL), 6-0, 6-1.
Daniel Gonzalez was not able to topple Hoony Shin of Rice as he fell, 6-4, 6-0, in the Round of 128. Gonzalez received byes in the first and season rounds of consolation. In the third round, he cruised past Mark Rodgmann (CC), 6-1, 6-2, and then topped David Wanja (LU), 6-4, 6-2, in the fourth round. He fell to Jason Mok of Rice, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.
David Kuczer received a bye in the round of 128 before falling to Tobias Scheil for Rice, 6-2, 6-2, in the Round of 64. In the second round of consolation, he was not able to power past Ilie Babinciuc (SELU) as he fell, 4-6, 6-1, 10-7. Rudy Garza received a bye in the Round of 128 and then fell to Teddy Di Biasi of Texas Tech, 7-6, 6-2, in the Round of 64. He faced Zack Taylor (ULL) in the second round of consolation but was unable to overturn him as Garza fell, 6-2, 1-6, 10-8. In the Round of 128, Oivind Alver was not able to overcome Sinisa Markovic of Texas Tech as he fall, 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles action, Murgier and Skrypko received a bye in the Round of 64 and then edged Javier Herrera and Diego Mattar of UTA, 9-8. The pair fell to Jason Mok and Christoph Muller of Rice, 8-4 in the Round of 16.
Hooshyar and Kuczer also received a bye in the Round of 64 and then commanded a win over Matt Bain and Jerry Makowski from Texas A&M, 9-7. The duo could not overcome Shaun Ellison and Zack Taylor (ULL), 8-5, in the Round of 16.
